Exploring TINUY-AN FALLS: The Crown Jewel of Surigao del Sur

The beauty of Tinuy-an!

Through the years, I’ve been asking my traveler friends which waterfall in the Philippines is the most beautiful in their opinion. One of the most mentioned waterfalls is Tinuy-an Falls of Bislig in the CARAGA province of Surigao del Sur. When I finally got to see it for myself, I immediately understood why! It’s a stunning work of nature. With its beauty and size, anyone visiting would be awed!

Found in the faraway town of Bislig, Tinuy-an Falls is part of the Tinuy-an Falls Protected Landscape. Its watershed is characterized by a number of water tributaries, both intermittent and perennial. Streams, creeks and gullies course out into Burboanan River, which supplies most of the water of the falls. These water bodies have also been used as source of water for domestic use, transport, fishing and irrigation of lowland farm lands. The protected landscape is also said to be a nesting and breeding site of the country’s national bird, the Philippine Eagle.

Tinuy-an Falls is 99 m wide and 26 m (or 85 ft) high. It has three tiers, the third of which is the highest and widest part. Visitors can take a swim on its pools, especially on the natural pool of the second waterfall as it isn’t as deep compared to the one at the bottom of the third tier.

MINI FALLS. You’ll see this tier of waterfall when you are at the entrance. Look at the back of the trees. There’s the gorgeous waterfall everybody here wants to see!

One of the most popular travel destinations in the Philippines is none other than this stunning, gorgeous waterfall called Tinuy-an Falls in Surigao del Sur! Located in the city of Bislig, Surigao del Sur, this travel destination proved to be one of the most visited in the province.

Pristine waters of the fall.

How to go to Tinuy-an Falls:

  1. It should be noted that we contacted a travel guide/ habal-habal driver in Hinatuan for our trip in Surigao del Sur. We have arranged the itinerary for both Enchanted River and Tinuy-an Falls for a single day.
  2. If you’re going to come from Butuan, it’s better to stay overnight in Hinatuan or Bislig because traveling from Agusan del Norte can take about 5 hours or more. You won’t be able to enjoy the Tinuy-an if you’re in the rush.
  3. It’s best to contact a guide when you go here especially when you have limited time in your travel. You can arrange with him (or her) your itinerary when you visit. You can always choose to stay in Tinuy-an Falls for a whole day (as there are many activities you can do here including swimming, trekking, bird watching and wildlife or landscape photography), but if you’re pressed with time, it’s okay if you’ll just stay here for a half day.
  4. If you went to the province of Surigao del Sur using your car, you can easily drive your car going here. Tinuy-an Falls can be located via Google Maps, which we have tried while going here. It’s best to visit in the morning. You’d want to have good lighting when you’re going to take pictures of the falls!

Now, here are the pictures we took in Tinuy-an Falls. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen! You’ll see why here!

Oh lovely Tinuy-an Falls!

What activities can you do here in Tinuy-an Falls? Here they are:

  1. Swimming. There are designated spots in the area where you can swim.
  2. Trekking. You can climb the next tier of the waterfall and see it in a different perspective.
  3. Bird watching. There are birds endemic to the area that are reported to be seen here.
  4. Wildlife or landscape photography. Capture lots of pictures!!!!
REFRESHED. Look at how the tourists enjoy the waters of the waterfall! Using a raft to go near it, they also have to wear life vests especially if they do not know how to swim.

I hope I got to help you decide to visit Tinuy-an Falls in the province of Surigao del Sur. It’s a must-visit when you’re already in CARAGA Region!
